Discover Card has been running a series of promotions that give you 5% Cashback instead of the usual 1%. I’ve participated in the program for home improvement (places like Home Depot, ACE, Lowe’s, etc.), which started right when we moved and is conveniently running until the end of the month. Looks like June starts a new program where the promotion is 5% Cashback on gas purchases and a couple other types.
This makes is almost not worth it to sign up for one of the 5% gas cards that a couple other companies promote since they usually have low caps. Discover Card has a $1500 cap on each of these promos, which is quite high. Note that sometimes merchants are incorrectly categorized for these offers. When they originally registered their merchant account they were required to choose a code. This code needs to match whatever promotion is going on. If the merchant does not have the right code, then you may not receive the promotion.
This credit card is by far my favorite because of the usual 1% Cashback, and is even better with these 5% offers. Between the card and the usual coupons that I try to find, many of my home improvement purchases were heavily discounted.
